ROC The Block

Event Recap

Parks and Recs crews participated in the ROC the Block event in the Brighton and Southside neighborhoods. They addressed several maintenance issues by removing overgrown shrubs that were obstructing sidewalks and extending into the street. They also raised low-hanging tree branches, cleared wild growth of tree suckers that were blocking sidewalks and curb areas, sprayed overgrown vegetation, removed litter and debris, and mowed or trimmed the overgrown strips of grass along the city right-of-way. Additionally, tree stumps were noted for removal at a later date and tree companies were contacted for a quote on a tree removal on Lansing Ave.

The Portsmouth Police Department engaged directly with community members, distributed informational materials, responded to citizen concerns, and supported the overall initiative through visibility and outreach. Activities included door-to-door engagement, distributing ROC the Block resource cards, identifying city maintenance concerns, and providing on-the-ground support for event operations. The department also helped promote city services and youth programs through citizen conversations and referrals.

Permits and Inspections: During July 10 to July 18, a team of inspectors conducted coordinated property maintenance outreach inspections, for overgrown grass/weeds, debris, inoperable vehicles, and various other property maintenance issues. A total of 371 systematic inspections were conducted across both neighborhoods, including properties with no violations.

Waste Management: The Roc the Block team picked up trash on the streets and filled 106 trash bags. We also removed 62 tires.
